Funeral For A Friend - Best Friends And Hospital Beds (Single Review)

Funeral For A Friend’s follow-up single to 2011’s critically acclaimed 'Welcome Home Armageddon', an album which saw the band approach their music with a new sense of forceful application after the addition of new members, 'Best Friends And Hospital Beds' is set for release by Distiller Records early next week.
Having recently announced the forthcoming release of their sixth studio album 'Conduit', the new album features the addition of drummer Pat Lundy, previous drummer of Rise To Remain following the departure of 10-year drummer and vocalist of FFAF, Ryan Richards.
The post-hardcore band have generated such hype about the unveiling of their new single this week, and with it finally here fans have greeted it with smiles. As the first taste of their new album, the single proves that the band have embraced their hardcore roots.
Much heavier than their earlier material, the melodic riffs seen in previous releases such as 'Jeneau' are still apparent, though updated with drive and urgency. Always being one of rock's most emotional and empathetic bands, this single is certainly not one that redirects their sound. In fact, the single could be considered Funeral For A Friend’s most impassioned yet.
After ten long years, the five-some have endured many highs and lows in their career reflecting the sincerity in the lyrics of their heartrending new single, “how many friends must I lose before it makes sense?”. The single adopts a satisfying maniacal approach as they deliver a torrent of riffs and knife-edge vocals. It is, however, surprising how the band are able to keep to a steady sound considering the member changes they have incurred during the past few years.
Although the group have not appeared in the UK Top 10 since their third studio album 'Tales Don’t Tell Themselves', back when the band were signed to Atlantic Records, this new single seems to deliver all the angst needed to re-establish the group as one of Britain’s persistent rock acts - and if their Wimbledon gig from last year is anything to go by the boys definitely still hold their punk-rock-esque even better than before.
Funeral For A Friend release 'Best Friends And Hospital Beds' on Monday 12th November. They perform on the Vans Warped tour on 10th November at London’s Alexandra Palace. You can catch them live on a headline tour early next year.
