American alternative metal icons Deftones paid tribute to late rapper Chris Kelly at a gig earlier this week, following his untimely death on Wednesday evening.
Deftones were performing in St Louis on Wednesday, the night in which Kelly - one half of legendary hip-hop duo Kris Kross - sadly passed away, from what is believed to be a speedball (heroin and cocaine) overdose.
After receiving word of the news, the band decided it only fitting to pay tribute to the star, by performing a mash-up of their song ‘Engine No. 9’ and Kris Kross mega-hit ‘Jump’ - which put them on the radar in 1992 and sold over 2million copies in the US alone.
Frontman Chino Moreno told the crowd at the gig:
“We got word that a member of Kris Kross has passed. I know it’s not good news. But we represent boing, boing, boing tonight. Kris Kross will make you jump jump!”
Moreno then revealed that the band’s drummer was wearing his clothes ‘backwards AND inside out’, in reference to Kris Kross’ trademark dress style, which saw them wearing their clothes backwards.
