Thirty Seconds To Mars arrived before a capacity crowd at the Motorpoint Arena and from the opening note it was clear that the trio know how to put on a show, mixing theatricality with a slate of crowd-pleasers that continues to grow.
From the opening aerial entrance of Jared Leto, to Birth, the first track from their latest album, ‘Love Lust Faith + Dreams’, they had the crowd in the palm of their hands. With tumba drumming, circus style entertainment between songs and giant balloons spiralling across the arena, the band underlined their ability to dominate rooms of this size.
The ultimate showman, Leto used the audience throughout the show, getting fans on stage to introduce songs, taking photos with them and even serenading one audience member with a rendition of Happy Birthday.
The show mixed their high voltage sound with an acoustic set, during which Leto took requests from the crowd, including fine renditions of This Is War and Hurricane.
The stripped back versions went down particularly well with the crowd and demonstrated the band’s multi-faceted appeal. They departed after pulling 30 or so very enthusiastic fans on stage for Up In The Air, leaving with another tick in the box.
Earlier in the evening, You Me At Six drew a strong response from a decent crowd, one that clearly contained a number of their own faithful. Their reception could have seen them mistaken for headliners on another night, with a run through Lived A Lie - the first single from their new album ‘Cavalier Youth’ - suggesting a bright 2014 for the band.
