Scottish fans have been waiting patiently for Papa Roach to once again cross their fine borders and Glasgow’s Barrowland was rammed for the Sacramento band’s return, which brought with it plenty of old fashioned swagger and an abundance of electronic experimentation.
American Fangs opened the show and their set provided a punk atmosphere, even though they blend a number of genres into their particular brand of chaos. Blink and you might miss their singer, Gabe Cavazos, disappear into the crowd. Highly energetic with a real presence to their stage show, they are ones to watch in the future.
Middle Class Rut also possess plenty of presence and, having toured with Glasgow's own Twin Atlantic across America, they pulled Sam McTrusty on stage for their track New Low, a definite high point for the audience.
Papa Roach launched into Burn and the electro brilliance of Silence Is the Enemy to really kick the show off in style. And, after all these years, it was clear that the foursome can still bring bags of energy to their live show. Anarchy took over among the crowd and the band didn't simply replicate their album tracks, they dominated that stage.
Jacoby Shaddix, the band’s frontman, was on top form for the evening, with an impromptu dick joke having the crowd laughing like kids, while his raps proved a particular bonus for the old schoolers. From the classic Between Angels and Insects through Leader Of The Broken Hearts, to the main set's climax of ...To Be Loved, they killed it.
Their encore began with a moment of poignancy, as Getting Away With Murder was accompanied by a minute's silence for Dimebag Darrell. Dead Cell and Last Resort wrapped up a journey through old and new, everything their fans could have wanted from a Papa Roach show.
