Meltdown is the first new music to arrive under his own steam since the release of his self-titled debut solo album in 2018, and it was worth the wait, offering up infectious disco-influenced dance-pop alongside his trademark falsetto vocals. He said:
"I wrote 'Meltdown' on the hottest day of the summer in New York City," he says now. "It’s a compact little jam born from inspiration in the moment. In a way, it is a tribute to one of the biggest queer music pioneers, Sylvester, who has also been a major vocal and spiritual touchstone for me. You can also hear sprinkles of Hot Chip, Cerrone, Prince and The Presets. 'Meltdown' is also a hint of the Sinister Dystopian Dance Pop to come. Let’s call it the SDDP for now. Whatever the case, get ready to put on your boogie-hooves."
The Scissor Sisters vocalist will return to the UK this summer to headline Blackpool Pride, taking a brief break from working on further solo projects.
Shears has been busy, having recently been revealed as the unicorn on ITV's The Masked Singer television programme. He's also currently working with Elton John and British playwright James Graham on a musical about Tammy Faye Bakker, the American evangelist known for embracing the LGBT community.
