Charlie Watts has died aged 80.
The news of the passing of The Rolling Stones' drummer was confirmed by his London publicist Bernard Doherty to the PA news agency and later the band via social media. The statement said:
"It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family.
"Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also, as a member of The Rolling Stones, one of the greatest drummers of his generation.
"We kindly request that the privacy of his family, band members and close friends is respected at this difficult time."
Watts recently withdrew from the Stones' upcoming US tour to recover from a medical procedure, with a spokesman confirming that he was "unlikely to be available for the resumption of the Rolling Stones USA No Filter Tour this fall." He will be replaced by Steve Jordan for the tour, which begins on September 26 in St. Louis.
No details were provided about the procedure or reason for it, so it's uncear if it was related to Watts' 2004 throat cancer diagnosis.
The renowned sticksman has been a member of the legendary rock band since 1963, and hasn't missed a show since then. Alongside frontman Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards, he's also the only other member of the band to have played on all of their studio albums, the latest of which was 2016's 'Blue & Lonesome'.
Charlie Watts is survived by his wife Shirley and daughter Seraphina.
