Jesy Nelson has released her debut single.
Boyz, which features rap superstar Nicki Minaj and samples P.Diddy's 2001 hit Bad Boy 4 Life, was co-written by Nelson following a break-up. It's a club-ready track that draws from the noughties US hip hop and R&B that the singer grew up on. She said:
“'Why do I like bad boys, what is wrong with me? Why am I attracted to anyone that looks naughty? So I messaged [production duo Loose Change] and was like 'you'll think I'm a nutter but I really want to write a song about why most women like bad boys and I want to use the Diddy song' and they were like 'let's do it’.”
Alongside Harry James, Nelson also co-directed the single's accompanying video that reimagines the clip for Diddy's song — there's even a cameo from the man himself, Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Nelson left Little Mix, who she'd been a member of since 2011, in December 2020. Discussing going it alone, she added:
“I just want to be myself and be real. I want my fans to hear that they're my stories because they genuinely are. No one has come in and told me what to write about. This is the music I've always wanted to make.”
