Metronomy are indie survivors. Their first album was released in 2006 and the road to their latest, ‘Small World’, has found them dodging trends and fluttering tastes on their way to taking their most intrinsic step so far.
We’re used to Metronomy giving us memorable rhythms and embedding them among electronic elements to create songs that appeal to both lovers of indie and dance music. Those rhythms are still here but on ‘Small World’ Joe Mount looks towards melodic serenity as the band ponder some of life’s deeper questions.
The stakes are high from the off on album seven with the opener Life and Death, even if the introduction of rolling piano keys and a sense of tranquillity would suggest otherwise.
They surround the subject matter of mortality with seriousness yet also a sense of underlying hope. It’s a theme that punctuates the first five tracks.
Love Factory is the rhythmic crown jewel on this album and maybe one of their best tracks, its simple chorus sung in harmony with a repeated refrain of “she knows” and accentuated with a flicker of flair. It is highly addictive and in this moment the band could not be any higher in the clouds.
Metronomy don’t nail the same standard of quality across the album, yet there is hardly a dull moment and they still find small new ways to branch out, such as weaving in moments of gorgeous orchestral pomp.
On ‘Small World’ you get every element that has made Metronomy such a fun and freeing listen for well over a decade. Yet, there is a real world-weariness here as they confront the caveats that come with the highest moments and the reckonings that come later in life. We’re all trying to navigate our own small world.
