Alex G has established a reputation as one of American indie music’s great experimenters. Crafting lo-fi realms that change scenery at a moment’s notice, he has developed a knack for writing songs that are rewarding listen upon listen.
On his latest album ‘God Save The Animals’, he open himself up to wider collaboration. In making the record he spent time out of his bedroom, working with various studio engineers to produce the “perfect” sound. Thankfully, his definition of perfect changes with each track and what we get is an album of continued variation.
Here, Alex’s vocals are more obscured than ever as he’s joined by a revolving cast of voices, and is sometimes heavily AutoTuned himself. In doing this, we feel surrounded by a cast of characters who are interacting with its overarching concept of faith in different ways.
From wanting forgiveness (Forgive) to feeling safety and comfort (Ain’t It Easy) and considering having a baby (Miracles), the album isn’t as much an exploration of the idea of faith itself as it is a lens on how it affects our everyday decision making and goals.
Pulling from genres such as hardcore, electronica and dance music, ‘God Save The Animals’ is one of his most sonically diverse albums to date. Despite the stylistic shifts, often there’s a sense of serenity throughout the songs, with a sense of enlightenment almost implicit.
He also plucks some of the best elements from his previous works and reshapes it, such as the child-like innocence of After All, which feels like a cousin of Southern Sky, or the rhythmic beauty of Miracles, a song that could find a home somewhere on ‘Rocket’.
There’s maximalism and minimalism here in equal measure, from acoustic numbers to sweeping, pixelated drones. Everything about ‘God Saves The Animals’ feels perfectly balanced and reinforces the fact that Alex G is a master of melody, no matter the range of sounds that he’s working with.
