The 1975 - Being Funny In A Foreign Language (Album Review)

Arriving at the crest of their fifth album’s wave, The 1975 can reflect on a spellbinding, sometimes confrontational, time in the spotlight. On ‘Being Funny In A Foreign Language’ we can feel the band stride into a more mature sound, comfortable with those experimental edges from prior releases, but headstrong when it comes to making music that ticks the right boxes.
Through layers of stripped back chords, frantic piano keys and confessional lyrics, Matty Healy sets out his stall early. On the opening track, which will forever be titled The 1975 on their LPs, he professes: “I’m sorry about my 20s, I was learning the ropes. I had a tendency of thinking about it after I spoke.”
It is refreshing to be greeted by an album that isn’t trying too hard, or charging heavily into a new genre, like 2020’s at times off-the-wall ‘Notes on a Conditional Form’. Instead, The 1975 are themselves at their very best.
Cue the happy-go-lucky hum of Happiness, contrasting to the strangely refined eloquence of Part of the Band. Healy’s measured, salty and satirical lyrics never fail to delight and intrigue listeners in the same breath.
‘Being Funny In A Foreign Language’ is a fabulous addition to a diverse discography, yet instead of feeling new it instead reflects the familiarity of returning home and taking a moment to relish tongue-in-cheek remarks and toe-tapping melodies. It’s The 1975 simply being The 1975.
