Creeper - Sanguivore (Album Review)

Wednesday, 18 October 2023 Written by Rebecca Llewellyn

British punks Creeper arrive at their third studio album with a sweeping sense of gothic grandeur now a vital part of their sound. On ‘Sanguivore’ the band plays into every tongue-in-cheek spooky narrative and arterial fountain with total confidence and an unshakeable sense of self.

Indulging their long-standing flair for the dramatic, the build-up to the album has seen vampires emerging from coffins, beheaded band members splattered across social media, and the unmissable introduction of video nasty-esque leading lady, Darcia.

Luring fans into the atmosphere of the album, beneath a howling moon and amid smoke-shrouded graveyards, the visuals have become vital to the curious attraction presented by Creeper, but their sound is equally as vibrant.

Opening track Further Than Forever announces itself with all the pizzazz of a striking rock opera, fitting for a packed-out Broadway production. ‘Sanguivore’ has been billed by lead vocalist Will Gould as “a new tragic story of love, loss and vampires” and Creeper giddily stay in character, delivering the sort of grandstand epics that made Meat Loaf and icon.

While best sampled from start to finish for full appreciation, standout moments include Cry to Heaven and Teenage Sacrifice, with elaborate choruses playing off lyrics dripping in black leather, lace and bloodlust. As track after track bursts through with mighty guitar riffs, embellished by Gould’s hauntingly powerful vocals, ‘Sanguivore’ feels like Creeper delivering on their earlier promise.
