Billie Marten arrives at her fourth album knowing precisely who she is creatively. ‘Drop Cherries’ is a record befitting its name, with syrupy romantic notions placed delicately among her trademark acoustic indie-folk.
Opening with the whimsical introduction of the near-instrumental New Idea, Marten’s hums carry across a dream-like sequence, transitioning into plucky guitar as she blends almost seamlessly into God Above. Her curt yet smooth vocals offer the first glimpse of Marten’s lyrical inner monologue: “Fresh are the flowers, and air that is sweet, bringing me back to you.”
Moments of poignancy ripple through as Marten divulges her views on love and life. ‘Drop Cherries’ gives space for soft catharsis as each track delves a little further into her world, with her head and heart forming a tender union.
Originating from Yorkshire, Marten’s roots are entwined firmly with her take on folk. Evoking stirring images of rolling moors, ancient stone walls, luscious woodland and the yearning distance between lovers, one cannot help but sense this record serving as a sentimental homecoming of sorts.
The title track beautifully conveys the overall tone of the record, which was recorded entirely on tape late last summer, furthering its alluring vintage appeal and sweet-hearted warmth.
