The National have announced a new album and accompanying tour dates.
'First Two Pages of Frankenstein', their ninth studio record and the follow-up to 2019's 'I Am Easy To Find', is due for release on April 28 via 4AD.
The band produced the 11-track album at Long Pond Studios, New York, and it boasts guest appearances by Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and Sufjan Stevens.
As a preview they've shared cut Tropic Morning News, a co-write with lead singer Matt Berninger’s wife Carin Besser that takes its name from the phrase he uses to describe doomscrolling. He said:
“The idea of referring to the darkness of the news in such a light way unlocked something in me. It became a song about having a hard time expressing yourself, and trying to connect with someone when the noise of the world is drowning out any potential for conversation.”
The National will support the new record with tour dates in the US throughout the summer, followed by an arena run across Europe and the UK in the autumn. The latter leg will call in Dublin, Leeds, Glasgow and London.
Tickets go on general sale at 10am local time on January 27. Support on select dates will come from Soccer Mommy, The Beths and Bartees Strange, with Patti Smith and her band set to join them as a one-off for their New York show at Madison Square Garden.
