Burt Bacharach, one of music's greatest composers, has died aged 94.
A representative for the songwriter and performer, who scored 73 Top 40 hits in the US and 52 in the UK, confirmed the news to the Washington Post, revealing that the singer died of natural causes on Wednesday (February 8) at his Los Angeles home.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Bacharach was famous for composing hits like I Say A Little Prayer, Walk On By and What The World Needs Now Is Love. He worked alongside artists such as Dionne Warwick, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Barbara Streisand, Tom Jones, Aretha Franklin and Elvis Costello, among many others.
In tandem with lyricist Hal David, he also penned a number of film themes, including What's New Pussycat, Alfie, and The Look Of Love, a massive hit for Dusty Springfield.
In 1969, Bacharach and David won a Grammy Award and an Oscar for Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, a song performed by BJ Thomas that featured in the film Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid.
More recently, he performed at the world-famous Glastonbury Festival in 2015, and played the Kelvingrove bandstand in Glasgow in 2019.
Tributes from the world of music have been flooding in, with former Oasis co-songwriter Noel Gallagher writing: "RIP maestro, pleasure to have known you".
Quoting from I Say A Little Prayer, actress Rosario Dawson wrote: "Forever, and ever, you'll stay in my heart and I will love you".
Tim Burgess of The Charlatans called his work, "one of the greatest songwriting legacies in the history of ever."
