Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - Land of Sleeper (Album Review)

Written by Tom Morgan
British doom metal bands occupy key spots in the genre’s canon. Black Sabbath invented it, Electric Wizard made it more evil, Iron Monkey upped the transgressive ante and, more recently, Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs have imbued this dark and murky genre with crossover-friendly fun.
The Newcastle-based five-piece have built up a versatile following, from metalheads to Quietus-reading nerds to 6 Music-listening casuals. Their appeal stems from the band’s ability to ride joyous, Sabbathian grooves, as well as their deserved reputation for being one of the best live acts around.
‘Land Of Sleeper’, Pigs x7’s fourth studio full-length, continues the band’s exploration of the more jubilant side of downtuned heavy metal. Mr. Medicine is a short, sharp banger that keeps the energy high and features some of vocalist Matt Baty’s strongest melodies.
The following track, Pipe Down!, is equally riveting, featuring more stirring vocals from Baty and swathes of thrilling drum fills. Several of the longer tracks also stand out. Big Rig features an opening riff that Tony Iommi would be proud of, as well as enormous grooves and brilliant lyrics about "this godforsaken English town".
Two more eclectic tracks are also worth noting. The drone exercise Mr. Weatherman is Pigs x7’s most sinister track, while closer Ball Lightning sees the band explore new textures and atmospherics.
Few metal bands in the country have as much personality as Pigs x7. Their approach to the genre is truly fun and never forgoes the urge to exploremore unusual avenues. This will surely be one of the best British rock albums of 2023.
