Rodrigo y Gabriela - In Between Thoughts…A New World (Album Review)

Rodrigo y Gabriela have now achieved something that many recording artists dream of, by managing to completely own their sound. If you hear duelling Spanish guitar pop playing in a public space, it is almost certainly going to be them.
This is demonstrated on their latest release ‘In Between Thoughts…A New World’, where they kick at the outer edges of their genre. There is some really good stuff here.
Opening track True Nature is an epic Spaghetti Western number that actually recalls Muse’s Knights of Cydonia as much as the Ennio Morricone soundtracks that feel like a more natural musical ancestor.
It feels lazy to describe this music as cinematic and yet the lack of lyrics, not to mention the swirling strings, undoubtedly lead us there.
Additionally, tracks like Egoland and The Eye That Catches The Dream make one think of Robert Rodriguez’s Mexico Trilogy, or certain Quentin Tarantino moments. Perhaps even the soundtrack to some epic Las Vegas spectacle.
It’s grand, rich, textured guitar music loaded with wit and endeavour. And as we wind our way toward the end there is some marvellously passionate writing, even if one suspects the song titles (Finding Myself Leads Me To You / The Ride of The Mind) may have translated from the original Spanish rather clunkily. But on the whole the album is a very accomplished and compelling listen, and you could pick far worse music to soundtrack your Cirque du Soleil / Siegried & Roy extravaganza.
