Slowdive have announced their fifth studio album.
The follow-up to their 2017 self-titled LP is called 'Everything Is Alive' and will arrive on September 1 via Dead Oceans.
The record began life back in the autumn of 2020, with the British quartet recording across the UK over two years. Lead guitarist and songwriter Neil Halstead manned the control desk, while Grammy Award-winning engineer Shawn Everett mixed six tracks on the LP, which is dedicated to singer and guitarist Rachel Goswell's parents, who both died in 2020. She shared in a statement:
"There were some profound shifts for some of us personally. Those crossroads are reflected in the many-layered emotional tenor of Slowdive’s music; everything is alive is heavy with experience, but each note is poised, wise, and necessarily pitched to hope. Its unique alchemy subtly embodies both sadness and gratitude, groundedness and uplift."
To accompany the news, the shoegaze pioneers have released the LP's first single, Kisses, which leans into the more pop orientated side of their sound, anchored by a punchy beat with layers of dreamy reverb.
"It wouldn’t feel right to make a really dark record right now," Halstead reflected on the song. "The album is quite eclectic emotionally, but it does feel hopeful."
Kisses' accompanying video was filmed in Naples and helmed by Noel Paul, who added: "If this video evokes emotion, it’s largely due to our excellent cast. In particular, Charlie and Claudia, two courageous and beautiful souls who threw themselves into their roles and set a tone of fearless vulnerability."
Following a run of Australian dates in July, as well as a series of festival slots, including their Glastonbury debut this Sunday (June 25), Slowdive will embark on a North American tour in the fall. Following that, they've lined up UK and Ireland shows in late October and early November. Tickets go on general sale at 10am this Friday (June 23).
'Everything Is Alive' tracklist:
1. Shanty
2. Prayer Remembered
3. Alife
4. Andalucia Plays
5. Kisses
6. Skin In The Game
7. Chained To A Cloud
8. The Slab
