Chelsea Wolfe has always been unpredictable. The last we heard from her, she was teaming with Converge to create an unholy racket on their ‘Bloodmoon: I’ collaborative album, having already experimented with genres including folk, goth, rock, and industrial in her solo career. It’s remarkable, then, that her latest album ‘She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She’ manages to venture into uncharted territory once more.
These are some of Wolfe’s most daring and experimental tracks yet, with its writhing electronic undertone feeding into her status as a modern goth icon. The captivating opener Whispers In The Echo Chamber creates an otherworldly atmosphere that draws us in like a siren’s call. The guitar work of Bryan Tulao builds suspense, with Wolfe’s talk of cutting ties with those holding you back mirroring her latest stylistic shift.
Everything Turns Blue celebrates how it feels to break away from a toxic situation, with Wolfe’s vocals taking centre stage. Synths gradually build to add a drop of warmth, conjuring the sense that we are emerging from darkness, from despair to hope.
The overriding feeling conjured by ‘She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She’ is an uneasy sort of intrigue. The Liminal and Tunnel Lights are perfect examples of this, with the former steadily building in intensity until it reaches its climax. On the other hand, the latter boasts a sultry ambience, propelled by deep bass, haunting piano, and electronic drums. Wolfe’s vocals, laced with glitchy effects, only add an extra layer of mystique.
It's perhaps Place In The Sun that ties the album together, delicately balancing melancholic piano with Wolfe’s fragile performance, its lyrics expressing a newfound sense of comfort and safety within herself. As the last chords of Dusk dissipate, ‘She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She’ settles on a hard-won air of release and resolution. Featuring some of her most profound and contemplative writing yet, it stands tall amid one of the most compelling discographies in modern rock.
