John Legend has revealed details of a new album of sing-alongs and lullabies for children and families.
Produced by Sufjan Stevens, 'My Favorite Dream' will arrive through Republic Records on August 30. Comprising nine original tracks penned by Legend, two covers and a solo piano composition, the project also features three bonus tracks covering Fisher-Price songs.
Alongside the news, Legend has shared the first single from the record, L-O-V-E, a sunny, melodic offering that features his wife Chrissy Teigan and two of his children contributing backing vocals. Commenting on the motivation behind the album, the father of four explained:
"I'm right in the thick of fatherhood. My parents loved to sing around the house, making up bedtime songs for us and songs to motivate and inspire us. And Chrissy and I also love singing to our kids. We make up little jingles and ditties for them all the time. In our home, music is very important to the way we interact and communicate with them."
He continued: "Once I started thinking about it, I decided I wanted to write a whole new children's album. I just took it on as a challenge to write some original lullabies and children's songs that I would want my kids to hear, something we could share with kids and parents all over the world."
On the new single, he added: "Love is the central theme in so much of my life from family to music to philanthropic work to everything I do in business. This song captures the spirit of what I always wanted this album to be. I wrote it as an anthem to celebrate our common humanity and bring a smile to people’s faces. I hope this song is uplifting and inspiring for everyone."
The first half of the project serves up songs that are spirited and lively, while the second half dials down the energy for a more calming sound around a ready-for-bed theme. On writing the music on the family piano, he said: "I usually write most of my albums at the studio. But I wanted to write this album with my family around."
Legend is currently touring the US with his An Evening with John Legend Tour, and has a handful of orchestral shows lined up for September. Tickets are on sale now.
