CMAT has laid out plans for her third studio album.
'Euro-Country' will arrive via AWAL Recordings on August 29, following up her BRIT Award and Mercury Prize-nominated sophomore LP, 2023's 'Crazymad, For Me'.
Recorded in New York, and co-produced by CMAT — real name Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson — and long-time collaborator Oli Deakin, it explores themes of societal pressures, personal identity and grief. CMAT said:
"'Euro-Country' is, I think, the best thing I have ever made. I felt halfway through recording it was the most important record I’ve made for myself… mainly because it was making me go crazy.
"I'm always going to make the work I want to make, because there is a little gremlin in my head that tells me if it’s shit. More than success, there’s a bigger gremlin that wants me to make music that’s really good. She’s brutal and has ruined my life at times, but she is the keeper of my life and she’s always right."
The announcement is accompanied by the Dublin artist's new single, Running/Planning, an infectious, country-tinged alt-pop offering that comes with a video. Discussing the song's creative motivation, she explained:
"Running/Planning is about having to chase your own tail to be good enough to exist. It’s an abstracted view of societal pressure on women - specifically through a relationship lens: You start dating someone, you get engaged, you get married, you have kids etc etc etc… everything has to follow this linear pattern. (That’s the reason for the repetitive chorus!). And the minute you don’t follow that path, your mam starts giving out to you. That narrow path that everyone is supposed to be on… the minute you get outside of that, it gets incredibly stressful. And I don’t know anyone who is like, ‘Yeah, love this!"
CMAT has also scheduled a new UK tour for the autumn, which includes her biggest headline UK show to date at London's O2 Academy Brixton on October 2. She will also play her biggest Irish show at Dublin's 3Arena on December 5. Tickets go on general sale at 10am on April 4.
Prior to that, she'll support Sam Fender at the North Shields singer-songwriter's stadium dates in London and Newcastle in June, before an appearance at Glastonbury Festival and a string of other major summer UK and European festivals. Tickets are on sale now.
In spring 2024, she released Aw, Shoot!, her first single since 'Crazymad, For Me', though it's currently unknown whether the track will appear on the new record.
