Rock guitar icon Slash has uncharacteristically spoken out about his former Guns N Roses band mate Axl Rose. What’s more unusual, the guitarist has praised the singer, labelling him as “phenomenal”.
Together they were the main cogs in the music machine tagged as “the most dangerous band in the world”, conquering the globe with the debut album ‘Appetite For Destruction’. The combination of Slash’s jaw-dropping guitar work and Axl ear-piercing vocals presented a massive force to be reckoned with, to this day the pair remain one of the rock world’s most iconic partnerships.
Although as often found, success came at a price with the relationship between the two soon turning bad. It was 1996, following the release of the not-so-great cover album ‘The Spaghetti Incident’, when Slash decided to split from Axl and Guns N Roses. Since that day it has been a simple war of words between the pair.
Axl Rose and Guns N Roses returned some 15 years later with the 2008 comeback album ‘Chinese Democracy’. Meanwhile Slash had been hard at work on projects such as Velvet Revolver and collaborations for his own solo album ‘Slash’.
Speaking to American newspaper the New York Post, the guitar legend claimed that he is actually a big fan of the album ‘Chinese Democracy’.
"It was the perfect Axl record" the guitarist said. “It’s exactly what I would have expected from the final years of us working together, and seeing where he was headed musically. It's very heavy, sort of a dark, depressing record. He's fucking phenomenal".
There is no official answer on the exact amount of money Guns N Roses have been offered to regroup as the classic ‘Appetite For Destruction’ line-up. One thing is certain though, it's definitely a massive figure! When asked whether that line-up could ever materialise on stage, Slash doubted that Axl could ever put past event to rest.
"I'm more stand-offish because I know how vehemently he hates me," he explained. "So that sort of makes me doubt it. But if we ran into each other and all that animosity were to pass for a second, then I'm sure we could have an interesting conversation."
Guns N Roses are already confirmed to headline both the Reading and Leeds Festivals this summer. The new line-up fronted as ever by Axl Rose will hit the main stage at the two sites this August.
Slash is set to release his highly anticipated solo album later this year.
