Damon Albarn Talks About Gorillaz Glastonbury Headline Show

With only two weeks to go before the Glastonbury gates open, Gorillaz man Damon Albarn has spoken out about the band’s headline slot at this year’s festival.

With old man Bono recently injuring his back, U2 were forced to pull-out of their headline performance at this year’s Glastonbury, a show which would have been their first British festival slot in decades.

Causing some serious injury to his back, Bono underwent some emergency treatment in the operating theatre and then followed the cancellation of a number of shows across North America as well as the prestigious Glasto appearance. With only a few weeks remaining until the festival opens, fans were curious as to who would step-in as a replacement for the Irish rockers.

Step forward Gorillaz!! Brilliant!! Worthy Farm will now receive a headline show from cartoon pop group Gorillaz, a result that has made quite a lot of ticket-holders very happy – no offence Bono.

Led by former Blur frontman Damon Albarn, the headline performance will be the singer’s second appearance in a row on the Pyramid Stage having appeared with Blur at last years event. Speaking to BBC’s Zane Lowe, Albarn said: "I was surprised and a bit nervous. I appreciate that it's a big deal but I think we can pull it off."

Continuing, the songwriter gave his condolences to U2 saying: "Obviously it's a great shame for U2 that they can't do that" he explained. "I know that they were really looking forward to playing that gig. They've never done Glastonbury. It's magic, Glastonbury. It's definitely magic in so many ways."

For the festival performance Albarn also said that he was eager to entice some guest stars onto the Gorillaz stage, "I just hope we can convince Lou Reed and he grasps that it's a real privilege to get the chance to do it. Then we'd have a complete house and that really would be amazing."

With Blur closing the Festival on Sunday night last year, this year Gorillaz will be playing the headline slot on Friday night allowing the band to soak up some of the unique Glasto atmosphere. "It's nice being at the beginning because (Blur) was right at the end and we had to get off stage and get in our bus and drive straight off, which was really strange. I didn't get a chance to experience it. I'd quite like this time to be able to do my thing and hang out for a while."

This year’s Glastonbury Festival takes place over the weekend of 25th, 26th and 27th June 2010.
