Every mum’s favourite cheeky X Factor contestant is back for his second single ‘Thinking of Me’. Olly Murs is often compared to the pop superstar Robbie Williams and he certainly possesses the same charm. Having come off X Factor as a very credible runner-up to Joe Mcelderry, he has gone for a very Jason Mraz-esque sound.
'Please Don’t Let Me Go’ was a number one hit for Mr Murs. I guess that is inevitable for a X Factor contestant but the vibe that emits from the tracks is a more original and authentic one. He seems to know the direction in which he wants to go and how he is going to get there, I have respect for that. There is a stigma surrounding reality show contestants but if they are creating a sound that is original and they are clearly talented, who says they shouldn’t be successful?
The single ‘Thinking of Me’ has a very summery feel to the song, similar to his first single. The lyrics are very cliché for a pop track but the slightly reggae beat in the background freshens the song up. The vocals are what we have come to expect from the Essex lad who has been entrenched into the hearts of the UK's middle -aged women population since his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstition’ on The X Factor. The song does tail off into the latter part after a promising start but it is very radio-friendly and you can picture the perfect autumn’s morning accompanied by 'Thinking Of Me' on the radio.
His self-titled album will be released in November 2010 and the album has seen Olly work with Roy Stride who has previously worked with the pop writing machine that is Scouting For Girls and Preston from the The Ordinary Boys. It is refreshing to see an X factor contestant return with a totally original album. There is nothing more uninteresting and uninspiring than a CD full of moderately average cover versions of good songs. Luckily Mr Murs has gone against this trend by using original material on this album.
‘Thinking of Me’ is likely to do well in the charts, primarily because of the X Factor aura that surrounds the lad from Essex but also because it is a great track. It s great to listen to while walking to work on some sunny but Baltic Thursday morning and it does have the potential to give your day a bit of a kick-start. The track also oozes that little bit of arrogance and cockyness that helps as an endearing quality alongside Murs' “boy that has done well” performances.
Olly Murs has an extremely likeable character and Simon Cowell’s piggy bank would have been jumping at the chance to snap him up after his first audition. The perfect marketing combination of ‘The boys want to be you and the girls want to be with you’ applies to this young man as he has the cheeky chappy charm that every man likes in a drinking pal. He also has the handsomeness and confidence that will have the girls weak at their knees.
‘Thinking of Me’ is highly likely to be another big hit single for Olly Murs. The track carries the same ‘Jason Mraz’ or ‘Jack Johnson’ vibes and this makes the X Factor runner up current and credible in the current charts. Well done young sir, I (and most of the public) will be looking forward to the rest.
