Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi - Two Against One / BLACK (Double A-Side Review)

Danger Mouse is one of those producers that everyone wants to work with. His collaboration with the then unknown Cee Lo Green sparked Gnarls Barkley and THAT song that was #1 forever. He wrote his own Grey Album, mixing together Jay-Z and the Beatles to create something interesting and new, and he’s also produced Gorillaz second (and arguably best) album. Oh, and he’s having a major influence on U2s next LP too. Basically, everything he touches turns to gold and this double A-side, released as part of Record Store Day, is no different.

ImageA taster of the upcoming 'Rome' LP, a collaboration Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi have been working on for six years, opens with 'Two Against One', a sultry, dark, deep crooning ballad featuring former White Stripe Jack White, whose trademark vocals ooze over this infectious track. It’s like the musical version of a fondue fountain: Naughty, inviting, utterly irresistible. White is on fine form here, but the layering of the instruments make you feel like he’s watching you from behind the shadows. Excellent.

As for the second offering, Norah Jones trills beautifully on the sublime 'Black'. With more brass involved this would be easy to imagine as a potential Bond tune. Jones’ low-toned husky vocals turn this into something incredibly enticing. It sucks you in, plays around with you for a bit and spits you back out. The string solo, while not musically complex, adds a whole new layer to this piece of art. While everyone was clamouring for the new Radiohead vinyl, the Nirvana release, or the Foo Fighters B-Sides on Record Store Day, anyone who happened to pick this up probably got the best of the bunch, and with the 'Rome' album due out in just a few short weeks, we’re just about ready for more.
