The King of Limbs, to be honest, is the prime example of a record ready to be manipulated into remixes by the experimentations of DJ’s and electronic artists. While talk of a full album remix by Flying Lotus circulates, Radiohead have announced a series of summer remix releases. The first of which sees Canadian artist Caribou (Dan Snaith) tackle 'Little By Little', while new boy Jacques Greene gives 'Lotus Flower' a going over.
What has been delivered isn’t likely to surprise anyone. With Radiohead becoming more inclined towards the minimalist these days, that is exactly where these remixes have been guided. Caribou strips out the guitars of Little By Little’s opening and replaces it with a lonely harp. The cluttered beat is also replaced with a drum machine spitting out bass drum loops. Thom’s vocals have been slightly tampered with too, they’ve come to possess a haunting, removed feeling when in full flow. The chorus is not alone delivered by Yorke, he’s companioned by a synthetic male bass. Even though Snaith has stripped it back, he a simultaneously managed to pump it full of hidden beauty and by doing so manages to out do Radiohead.
Dan Snaith, with his years of experience, is counter-pointed brilliantly by Radiohead’s choice of new producer and DJ Jacques Greene to remix 'Lotus Flower'. Well as far as the vibe goes, it’s still here. The core of the song is intact, although Colin’s stunning bass has been switched out for synthesizers. It grows and recedes, but the ‘money-shot’ comes at four minutes. The payoff is an explosion of serotonin swirling through your brain. Its maracas, its pulsing beats and Thom Yorke on one of the most incredible loops I’ve ever heard.
Radiohead may have promised us a summer of remixes but they and their associates are going to have to go a hell of a distance to better these. All that’s left is to wish luck to Nathan Fake and Mark Pritchard, who are next up with remixes of 'Morning Mr Magpie' and 'Bloom', respectively. They’re going to need it.
