The Milk are a very interesting four-piece from Essex. 'B-Roads' is their second single, following their debut '(All I Wanted Was) Danger'. The track is taken from the wider EP 'B-Roads and B-Sides' and has earned the band their first airplay on national radio on Huey Morgan's 6Music show. Having recently been signed, the band are well in the running for 'Best Breakthrough Artist' at The UK Festival awards. There will be hype.
The track begins like a hip-hop record with sirens and record scratches, but once the guitar and vocals kick in what you're left with is essentially some excellent gritty soul music. 'B-Roads' mixes a strong beat with a classically funky combination of instruments, resulting in a much more raw take on soul music.
The band began life as a teenage punk band, before breaking away from each other to persue separate ventures. When they reunited their first plan was to use the motown, funk and soul music that shaped their childhoods to put on a club night, but they ended up forming The Milk. It's almost like the and took that initial punk rock spirit and infused it into soul music, making a kind of garage rock/soul sound.
With tracks like this it's not the surprising that The Milk have played plenty of sold out shows in venues like Jazz Cafe and the Camden Barfly. The track has a big pop song chorus, a chilled hip-hop vibe and the whole thing is absolutely dripping with soul and it'd go down great live. The song has a real feel-good feeling to it, which is totally helped by frontman Rick's amazing voice. You can see how they went down so well at festivals over the summer; The Milk are definitely a band to keep your eye on.
With the band making their first appearance in 2010, their debut album has been a long time coming and is finally due at some point next year. The album will be produced by Brad Baloo of The Nextmen, celebrated DJ and producer who has worked pretty extensively with Plan B.
If this single is anything to go by then the album will be great, and will have the potential to be really big. With soul-tinged pop stars such as Plan B, Amy Winehouse and Adele having already paved the way with popular soul music, The Milk's gritty soul music could go down a storm next year. Keep an eye on them, they could be (and deserve to be) huge.
