Pulled Apart By Horses emerged in late 2007, making a reputation for themselves as an exciting live act before releasing their self-titled debut in 2010. Two years down the line PABH are still injecting their unparalleled humour and energy into their shows and live recordings alike. 'Wolf Hand' is the follow-up single to 'V.E.N.O.M' off the band's second album, 'Tough Love'.
'Wolf Hand' follows a standard Pulled Apart By Horses formula; there's the powerful drums and thrashy guitar topped off with tongue in cheek lyrics – "When I was a kid/ I was a dick/ But nothing changes". The track is pretty short and sweet; clocking in at only two and a half minutes it's a quick and powerful song, but as powerful as it is, it's not as fresh as the bands earlier work. I'm sure the track, along with the rest of the new material, would fit into a live set list just fine. However, when compared to the bands earlier work, it does seem to be a lacking a little something.
Pulled Apart By Horses were unrivalled. They are no strangers to touring and have a lot of great shows and festival appearances under their belts. However, with the release of their second album, they're beginning to sound similar to a lot of their peers and if it wasn't for the trademark PABH humour in the song, although it's good, it could probably have been written by anyone.
Having said that though, even the first PABH record paled in comparison to their lives shows; I was surprised that their self titled debut managed to capture as much of their energy as it did. So I wouldn't completely dismiss any of the band's work, this track included, until you've experienced them live. With summer on the horizon, they're sure to be playing festivals across the country. I heartily recommend seeing them live, even if the second album isn't a must-have.
