Researchers at the University of Minnesota have made an alarming discovery with the results of their latest study – because apparently, listening to mainstream rock like Bruce Springsteen could possibly turn you into a racist.
The team of researchers decided (for some unknown reason) to see if different genres of music effect your racial incline and ethnic tolerance, so they conducted an experiment which saw 138 students listen to different genres of music for around seven minutes before being asked to take part in a study regarding how money should be distributed around their college between groups of differing ethnicity.
And, according to the results, its popular rock that seems to be making us the least likely to share the cash equally between races – with the white students who listened to the likes of Springsteen most likely to spread the money to other white students. Those who listened to more ethnically diverse music like Gwen Stefani or Akon were found to be fairer with the funds.
“Rock music is generally associated with white Americans,” UoM’s Heather LaMarre says, “so we believe it cues white listeners to think about their positive association with their own in-group.” Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, an associate professor, added “Music has a lot of power to influence our thoughts and actions, more than we often recognise. It has the power to reinforce our positive biases toward our own group, and sometimes negative biases toward others.”
