The Pigeon Detectives really are victims of the modern music trends. They were absolutely EVERYWHERE just five short years ago and now, nothing. It’s a shame really because, despite being not entirely ground-breaking, they always wrote catchy enough indie-rock anthems that would please a crowd at a gig. However, upon seeing what the Arctic Monkeys have gotten up to, still selling records despite a drop off in the guitar genre, it now seems like they have decided to all but copy their sound.
The problem I have here isn’t actually with the song. It’s raucous, loud, abrasive and energetic, just like it should be, it’s just that about 80% of it sounds too much like Alex Turner wrote it, which if he did would have been no bad thing. There’s songs that “sound” like other bands have written them, and then songs like this where you have to check the disc just to make sure it’s actually the right band you’re listening to.
The ironic thing here is that this is actually one of the best Pigeon Detectives songs I’ve ever heard. I’m not saying that because I’m some Arctic Monkeys fan either because I’m not, but I think there’s a certain musical cleverness here. The rhythm jumps about an awful lot so you’re not quite sure sometimes if, in the most basic terms, you’re listening to a “fast one” or “slow one”. You’re constantly thrown around the track, finding a bit to dance to before suddenly being catapulted into some wistful musical cuddle. It’s certainly far more advanced than 'Take me Back' was. It’s never difficult to listen to though. It’s the right mixture of emotive and fun without ever getting stuck right up it’s own rear.
Is it an instant classic? No. Absolutely not, and that’s not really a bad thing. It means that for as long as the Pigeon Detectives keep releasing singles like this, and albums, and touring, and doing all the rest of it despite the fact their glory days are seemingly over, it shows that they’re in this business for their fans now rather than just the money. Other bands with arguably more success have already split following their decline while these hard-working lads keep chugging along.
'Animal' was released Monday 28th Janaury 2013.
