It’s tempting to see Metz as the Death Star and your eardrums as Admiral Ackbar’s cruiser. But, this ain’t a trap. From minute one of this noise-rock trio’s debut, their aims have been perilously clear. They play loud, hard and with scant regard for anything you might like to hear. Their second album, unsurprisingly, is a straightforward example of ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it belligerence.
Metz’s power runs deep. Chris Slorach and Hayden Menzies are the sort of rhythm section that unhooks ribs, while Alex Edkins’ guitar is equal parts sludge and low-end heft. They have little time for preambles, preferring to come out swinging and see what happens.
When it locks in, it’s just glorious. Acetate, the opener, thuds into your chest for a few minutes, pauses for a quick breather and then commences to do it all over again. Spit You Out hops to DC and injects a bit of Dischord groove into the mix, while the brash I.O.U even tosses a big old chorus hook in. Edkins’ vocals teeter on the brink, dredging up a maniacal post-punk atmosphere.
As you might expect, there are times when the sheer force of delivery overwhelms. It’s here that a few further moments of calm - see Nervous System’s mid-section drum break before re-entering the fray - would have done nicely to further accentuate the precision of their assault. Metz are never anything less than effective, but there are hints that they might yet find new ways to bludgeon us in future.
Sometimes, though, it’s enough for a band to deliver precisely what you expect from them, as Metz have done here. This is a bruising collection of songs that will sound absolutely mighty live and, with added nuance bubbling beneath its furious surface, the next shots fired by Metz might catch us unawares.
