Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard has joined forces with five-time Grammy Award-winner Childish Gambino for a new recording of her song Stay High.
The collaboration will be part of Howard's upcoming album, 'Jamie Reimagined,' which features a series of remixed and reworked versions of her 2019 solo debut, 'Jamie.'
The original version of Stay High—which was awarded a Grammy for Best Rock Song—has a much more dreamy ambience, thanks to its twinkling piano melodies interlaced with slinky jazz-influenced guitars. This is replaced by a more electronic, almost '80s feel in Gamino's take, reminiscent in parts of his 2016 single Redbone. Howard said:
“Donald Glover [aka Childish Gambino] is so creative and ambitious. He gave ‘Stay High’ a very cool modern flair and, of course, I love the Prince vibes. The low vocal in the third verse is next level. As we come out of the last year and a half, I do hope the message of this song will carry on and inspire people to stay positive and not give up hope.”
Other artists that have contributed to 'Jamie Reimagined' include Bon Iver, Michael Kiwanuka, BADBADNOTGOOD, Laura Mvula and Jungle. The compilation will be released digitially by ATO Records on July 23, with the vinyl edition following on September 24.
