Defying genre norms can be a thin wire to walk across. But the Atlanta-based singer-songwriter Faye Webster makes it look easier than buttering a slice of bread.
Over the past seven years, Webster has created her own endearing blend of folk, R&B and alt-rock, appealing to multiple audiences in the process. Even Barack Obama loves her, having included the song Better Distractions among his favourites of 2020.
Moving on from that accolade, she makes a return with her wittily-titled fourth album, ‘I Know I’m Funny haha’.
Webster has the ability to create sounds that could be paired with an evening of relaxing drinks and good company while also relating lyrically to the self-deprecation each individual around the table puts themselves through.
While ‘I Know I’m Funny haha’ doesn’t feel as adventurous as her previous releases, Webster has delved deep into relatable human experiences and turned them into winning songs—from the stranger we’ve fallen in love with on A Dream With a Baseball Player to our own disbelief at realising that we can or deserve to be happy on In A Good Way. The level of relatability here is chilling, uncomfortable, and yet carries the warm embrace of someone else being there.
With the soft tones of her voice and matched to heavenly instrumentation, Webster has been able to go above and beyond on this album. ‘I Know I’m Funny haha’ is sincere and tongue in cheek at the same time—we all cry and we all laugh, we laugh about crying, and we cry about laughing. This is the sound of someone hitting the nail on the head when it comes to the vagaries of life in the most stylish fashion possible.
