Boston Manor Return With New Single Carbon Mono

Friday, 20 August 2021 Written by Jon Stickler

Boston Manor have shared a new song, Carbon Mono.

The track marks the Blackpool five-piece's first single for SharpTone Records and arrives ahead of their appearances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals later in August.

Recorded at producer Larry Hibbitt's Stustustudio in Brixton, it follows the band's third LP, 'GLUE', which landed in the middle of the first COVID-19-induced lockdown in 2020. Guitarist Michael Cunniff said:

"I realised that, as awful as that dark period in 2020 had been, it was also a blessing in disguise. We'd changed labels, and we wanted to try new things, and we had this space to do something different. We weren’t exhausted from 10 months on the road."

Drawing influence from late '90s bands such as The Cardigans, The Cranberries, and later era Depeche Mode, the infectious number swirls around a fusion of piercing, cascading synths, ominous guitar riffs, and impassioned vocals. Singer Henry Cox explained its origins:

"This song is a conversation that sort of goes back and forth between two people. It's about people's unwillingness to change and acknowledge our own shortcomings. It's a classic Boston Manor tune that we wrote for people to rage to live. We're so excited to be back playing shows and we just wanted to have something to play that people could blow off some steam to."

Commenting on its subject matter, he added: "My lyrics aren’t 'political' but they are about the alienation I began to feel from the common person on the street, an alienation magnified by the way the world has reacted to COVID and the lockdown, and the George Floyd murder… Isolation, anxiety, dread…"

The band will play three warm-up shows ahead of their festival slots this month. In February 2022, they'll embark on their rescheduled Welcome Back To The Neighbourhood Tour, with support coming from Movements and Jools.
