Hawkwind Co-Founder Nik Turner Dies Aged 82

Monday, 14 November 2022 Written by Jon Stickler

Nik Turner, co-founder and multi-instrumentalist for Hawkwind, has died aged 82.

Rumours of Turner's passing began to circulate on social media early last Friday (November 11), with a spokesperson for the musician confirming the news with a post on the artist's personal Facebook page at around 4pm GMT:

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Nik Turner - The Mighty Thunder Rider, who passed away peacefully at home on Thursday evening. He has moved onto the next phase of his Cosmic Journey, guided by the love of his family, friends and fans. Watch this space for his arrangements."

Turner joined the legendary space-rock band in their formative days back in 1969, playing saxophone and flute across two stints, between 1969 and 1976, then again from 1982 to 1984. He co-wrote a string of singles, notably the 1971 track Master Of The Universe, and 1972's Brainstorm.

Hawkwind was also Lemmy Kilmister's band for four years before he founded Motörhead in 1975. Motörhead’s official socials posted: "We lost Lemmy's old bandmate Nik Turner today. Play some Hawkwind nice and loud! Brainstorm here we go!"
