‘10,000 Gecs’ is the second studio album from American hyperpop duo 100 Gecs and arrives a year after it was initially slated for release. If the delay was due to adding final touches to the music, then it sort-of shows. This album is a frenetic, hyperactive melange of styles and genres with enough diversity of noise to keep the listener guessing for months.
It's also mental. It feels like the musical equivalent of smoking crack. And it’s undoubtedly an acquired taste. The single Mememe is an Auto-Tune-laden computer game song, squirting with dubstep basslines, ska inflected refrains, toy music and smashy shoutalongs. The feeling the track creates recalls certain Ween moments—somewhere between a novelty act and an art happening.
Elsewhere, Hollywood Baby grabs the satirical aftertaste and runs with it. Dylan Brady handles a chorus that sounds like other ‘Wee’ bands in Weezer and Wheatus: “I’m going crazy / Little tiny Hollywood baby / Brand new Mercedes.”
It’s really, really annoying music that is also marvellously, distinctively other. It’s also really, really annoying.
They cover a lot of bases though. There is nu-metal in the form of Billy Knows Jamie and there is comedy in the form of Frog on the Floor. If a nosebleed-inducing ride through the digital metaverse is your bag, you will probably like ‘10,000 Gecs’.
And the size of the audience for this is worth considering here. Despite its sonic mayhem,‘10,000 Gecs’ is actually being distributed through a major label in Atlantic. That means the money men and women are hoping the band dominates the hyperpop space, one that lives in doom scrolling, dark gifs, junk food ennui, crazed photo filters, plastic surgery and spiritual malaise. Ah, another nosebleed.
