Not unlike the opener of her previous LP ‘Any Shape You Take’, Time Back is a curve ball of an introduction to Indigo De Souza's latest release. The first song on ‘All This Will End’ is a dialled up fusion of Phoenix's indie-pop and EDM, flipping the script on a reputation that has situated the guitarist among the ranks of ‘90s indie-rock revivalists.
It is a bold embrace of the poppier side of her sound, which is revisited to great effect on Smog later in the record, that ends up feeling like another string to her bow rather than a reinvention. Elsewhere, De Souza is on a more familiar footing with You Can Be Mean, where driving chords and vocals that sound like they are being snarled through a busted mic carry an important message: how we can be good to ourselves by choosing those we let into our lives carefully.
While ‘Any Shape You Take’ barreled down the road towards whatever the future may hold, ‘All Of This Will End’ is altogether more contemplative.
Even with its driving chug, Parking Lot slows things down long enough for De Souza to try and suss out the source of her anxiety and how it can be overcome. Perhaps, as she says, “it's just hard to be a person feeling anything.”
The album's title track, and centrepiece, is also one of its most memorable moments. Not only does it introduce a welcome country lilt, it also puts a positive spin on living with a ticking clock. De Souza uses her mortality as a motivator and also as a reminder that we shouldn’t always take ourselves, or our own lives, too seriously.
Three albums in, De Souza is proving adept at creating resonant songs that, while at times deviating from the beaten path, never stray too far from the special brand of alt-rock she has made her own. ‘All Of This Will End’, sure, but we can only hope that before that day comes we hear much more from Indigo De Souza.
