The Coral have released a new song called Oceans Apart.
The stripped back acoustic offering features a vocal cameo from Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy during its outro, and serves as the closing number on the Wirral band's upcoming album, 'Sea Of Mirrors'. Slow-building with waves of cinematic orchestration, it offers another preview of the spaghetti-Western-themed aesthetic of the record, following May single Wild Bird.
The group described the track as, "the bohemian rhapsody Queen would’ve written if, instead of touring the world, they stayed in watching cinecittà studios films and listening to Gene Clark." On the voice-over, singer and songwriter James Skelly added:
"Once everybody had put their parts on the track. Sean suggested we have some dialogue over the outro and said he’d done the soundtrack to Cillian Murphy’s first film, so he had a contact. A few weeks later I got an email from Cillian saying he was a fan and would be up for helping us.
"We discussed the character and how I saw it as a once great star like Buster Keaton or Bella Lagosi on the set of a low-budget B movie, looking back thinking: ‘How did I get here?’ I sent him what Nick had written and then left it up to him to do his thing and when we put what he sent us over the music it fitted perfectly."
'Sea Of Mirrors' will arrive on September 8, alongside another album titled 'Holy Joe’s Coral Island Medicine Show', which was recently teased with the song Drifter's Prayer featuring narration from actor John Simm.
Other guests on the project include Love guitarist Johnny Echols, with former The Coral member Bill Ryder-Jones also contributing to songwriting on 'Sea Of Mirrors', marking his first work with the band since his departure in 2008.
The Coral will tour the UK in spring 2024, with each night billed as an intimate evening of music and conversation with Skelly and the band's multi-instrumentalist Nick Power.
