The Super Furry Animals vocalist will release 'Sadness Sets Me Free', his eighth solo LP, on January 26. Commenting on the writing sessions, he said:
"At this point, I quite like working with serendipity. Not in a cosmic way, I try and leave things open to chance encounters and chance geography. As I’m around 25 albums in I'm always looking for ways to make a different-sounding record."
"Mark James has brought the 'Sadness Sets Me Free' album cover to life and managed to place me watching TV interference in a shipping container that’s lost in space," he continued. "For what is apparently the 25th album I’ve had a hand in writing, I’ve reverted to a rich seam of inspiration relating to shedding some light on sadness and the general terror of cosmic loneliness."
The follow-up to 2021's 'Seeking New Gods' was recorded last spring with his live band, and features the newly shared Celestial Candyfloss, a melancholic pop track with soaring strings and catchy melodies that Rhys describes as, "an attempted pocket symphony about the cosmic lengths that people will travel in the pursuit of love and acceptance.". It comes paired with a surreal, spacey video directed by longtime collaborator Mark James.
Rhys will appear at Brighton's multi-venue Mutations Festival on November 5. He will also play Margam's In It Together Festival in May next year. A full list of his tour dates for this year and next can be found on his website, and includes shows and intimate record store performances in the UK.
