Friday, 13 October 2023 Written by Jon Stickler

Rudolph Isley, co-founder of The Isley Brothers, has died aged 84.

The iconic singer passed away on Wednesday (October 11), with the news confirmed by a publicist of the group. No cause of death was given.

Rudolph was the second eldest of the three-sibling vocal group, and played a pivotal role in their first 30 years as one of the biggest acts in R&B. He sang with his brothers from the 1950s until his departure in the late 1980s.

Known for their hits This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You), Twist and Shout, and Shout, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Rudolph was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022.

He mostly sang harmonies, though he took lead vocals on such tracks as I've Got to Get Myself Together and It's a Disco Night (Rock Don't Stop). He also helped write songs such as Harvest For The World and Fight The Power.

His brothers, Ronald and Ernie Isley, continue to perform as the Isley Brothers.
