Kehlani - Crash (Album Review)

Wednesday, 26 June 2024 Written by Issy Herring

A decade on from their first mixtape, ‘Crash’ finds Kehlani bending an R&B sound to their will, offering up unapologetic songs that dive into sexual expression and situationships with nods to queer sensuality. It pushes every boundary possible, and it is totally worth the risks it takes.

Kehlani’s vocals sizzle from the get-go with GrooveTheory - a sultry, expressive anthem that is hard to resist. From the first instance, they radiate so much self-confidence and gusto, leading effortlessly into Next 2 U, which explores territory seemingly inspired by Camila Cabello and The Weeknd.

After Hours and What I Want happily transport us back in time. The former samples Coolie Dance Riddim in a manner reminiscent of Nina Sky’s 2004 smash Move Ya Body while the latter takes on Christina Aguilera’s What A Girl Wants. After Hours, in particular, is a club friendly highlight.

But 8 is the most impressive track of them all, exploring themes of a WLW sexual relationship with no holds barred. “I'm in the mood, you know what to do / Treat this like some food / Ten minus two with you / Ain't the point of cake, just to eat it too / I'm tryna get ate / Ten minus two with you,” Kehlani coos in the chorus.

Sucia is one of two collaborations on ‘Crash’, featuring R&B icon Jill Scott and Puerto Rican rapper Young Miko. Scott and Miko offer a delightful change, making ‘Crash’ even more exploratory and revelatory than ever. Conversely, Tears, with Omah Ray, is a rare dud, struggling to keep the fire alive. Similarly, Deep is flimsy compared to the best moments here. Despite this, ‘Crash’ is proof that Kehlani is thriving in their own lane and loving every minute. It’s sexy, fun, exciting. It’s everything pop music should be.
