London Grammar have spent the years since their 2013 debut ‘If You Wait’ finessing their sound, drilling down into an emotive space where vocalist Hannah Reid can shine. Their fourth LP ‘The Greatest Love’ is an often excellent amalgamation of mature songwriting and lyrical vulnerability, vividly depicting the trials and tribulations of a romantic relationship.

Reid’s voice is consistently superb, moving between moments of internal strength and confidence, such as the electronic opener House, and raw sincerity, as on the standout Fakest Bitch. Exuding Taylor Swift ‘Reputation’-style energy, an ex is ripped to shreds with no holds barred. “People don't change, people stay the same,” she exclaims.

Ordinary Life is another hard hitter. Successfully guiding us through the struggles of modern life, it is sure to resonate with fans old and new.

It is the alt-pop driven Santa Fe that is the LP’s most infectious cut, though, conjuring a feeling of London Grammar back at the start of their journey.

That said, the wheels come off elsewhere. You and I and LA are unforgivably boring sub-Dido pop and even though the songwriting shoots for powerful and raw, Reid’s sense of vulnerability doesn’t seem to be as convincing this time round.

That’s only made more plain by Into Gold, which is a breath of fresh air. Its unfeigned lyricism radiates vibrantly alongside thumping electronic pulses. On one hand ‘The Greatest Love’ is a remarkable journey of self-discovery and acceptance, catapulting London Grammar into another musical dimension, on the other it’s more of the same.
