If it seems like Sabrina Carpenter has only recently exploded into the public consciousness, then that’s likely more about you than her. It’s been a decade since she debuted as Maya Hart on Disney’s Girl Meets World and almost as long since the release of her first album. Fast forward to the present day and she is now far removed from her sickly sweet child star persona, with her sixth LP ‘Short n’ Sweet’ radiating confidence and sex appeal at almost every turn.
While 2022’s ‘Emails I Can’t Send’ was too commercially driven to dig much below surface level, here Carpenter serves up a lyrically mature feast of retro pop. Co-written with Julia Michaels, the opener, Taste, the perfect intro to her revamped sound. Discussing the inevitable complexities that come with any romantic relationship, it is a breath of fresh air.
Good Graces sounds like it could be a B-side from Ariana Grande’s ‘My Everything’ era, which isn’t a bad thing. Its sultry air is hard to ignore.
It’s Coincidence, though, that stands head and shoulders above the rest. A truly infectious little number, it finds Carpenter adding another string to her bow while living her best life as a Joni Mitchell tribute act.
The Jack Antonoff-produced Please, Please, Please swerves in a different direction, delivering a compelling guitar-driven country-pop jam, but Carpenter does come a little unstuck when she returns to similar streets on Slim Pickins. Another Antonoff collaboration, it’s a middle-of-the-road Dolly Parton tribute that’s only marginally more interesting than the unconvincing Billie Eilish cosplay of Dumb & Poetic.
The sleek slow jam Don’t Smile finishes the album superbly, though, signing ‘Short N’ Sweet’ off as a varied, interesting slice of whimsical, easy-listening TikTok pop. Thanks to some well-placed injections of country, yacht rock and R&B, Carpenter’s really onto something here.
