Showing off the English band's knack for crafting original, dynamic and complex art rock, it follows lead single Crispy Skin in previewing their new album, 'Cowards', which is due out on February 7 via Warp Records. Vocalist and drummer Ollie Judge said:
"Building 650 is a song inspired by our first ever trip to Japan. We played the Summersonic festival in 2022. Luckily, we were booked to play two days after the COVID travel ban had been lifted. Because of this, we felt like some of the only tourists in Tokyo.
"On the plane, I read In The Miso Soup by Ryu Murikami and watched Lost In Translation out of excitement and later decided to write lyrics about being an outsider visiting Japan, including a very particular type of loneliness one can feel visiting a country that is so different from their own. This loneliness feels exaggerated in Tokyo. On the surface, itʼs hectic and full of people, but when you listen itʼs eerily quiet."
Check out the track's accompanying video, co-directed by long-time collaborator Felix Green and Japanese filmmakers Daisuke Hasegawa and Kuya Tatsujo.
The follow-up to 2023's 'O Monolith' was recorded with Mercury Prize-winning producer Marta Salogni and Grace Banks at Church Studios, Crouch End in London, with mixing in Seattle and mastering in New York. Friend of the band, Dan Carey, who helmed their previous two albums, is credited as co-producer, with contributions also from Danish singer Clarissa Connelly, composer and singer Tony Njoku, Rosa Brook of Pozi, percussionist Zands Duggan, and the Ruisi Quartet.
Squid will support the LP with a UK and European tour in the spring. They'll also play Primavera Sound in Barcelona and Porto on June 7 and 14, respectively. Tickets are on sale now.
