The Washington Capitals are an American ice hockey team hailing from Washington D.C. Part of the NHL's Eastern Conference, they compete in the Metropolitan Division, and were founded in 1974.
In their history, the Capitals have made it to the Stanley Cup Finals just once, having won the Eastern Conference Championship in their 1997/98 season. They seem to fare better in the regular season than the playoffs: they've clinched eight Division Championships, but never seem to do as well in the post-season. Previously coached by Hall of Famer Adam Oates, they're now (as of 2014) led by Barry Trotz, having failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007.
