Girls aloud are, without doubt, the UK's premier former reality-show girl group. Some may argue that due to the amount of time they consistently bothered the charts before their hiatus a few years ago, they could even unseat the Spice Girls from girl group domination. A lot of that was down to having a great mixture of catchy and emotional songs the kids loved, the girls loved, and the boys had guilty pleasures for secretly loving too, and in many ways 'Something New' ticks all those same boxes.
I’ll start with the negative first, because, there’s only one point here and it’s clearly just down to personal preference, but the monotone “We girls gonna go go go” bit was annoying the first time, right at the very start of the song, and there was absolutely “no no no” need to include it again as a bridge to one of the choruses. It just didn't sound in place at all and removed me from the track. Luckily, however, it only accounts for two small portions of the track and the rest is simply ace.
What with all the news surrounding Cheryl Cole over the past few years, and the solo success she’s had way above and beyond any of the other remaining girls, you’d expect the track to probably feature her prominently, but it doesn't, and I like that. Even the music video seems to feature all five girls in pretty much the same ratio as they had in previous efforts. This has always been a group effort, and that is the main reason it feels like Girls Aloud never went away when listening to this.
So when it comes down to the actual meat of the track, it does everything a Girls Aloud song should. It has an exceptionally catchy chorus. It’s utterly bursting with attitude, and each verse is pretty much unique to the person singing it, including a rap verse which was initially unexpected but does fit in with the tracks flow well. These things all together keep almost the whole song sounding fresh. It will be all over the dance floors this Christmas and should be a dead cert for Number One in the charts.
So, in summary, despite probably not being among long term classic like Jump or The Promise, there is no reason why this shouldn’t slot in with all the other massive successes that Girls Aloud have had. It’s fun, sassy and catchy and this boy has already made it one of his favourite guilty pleasures of the year. Now that they’re back as a unit, it would a shame to see them go away again.
