The Coral - Distance Inbetween (Album Review)

Thursday, 10 March 2016 Written by Ben Gallivan

There hasn’t been much news from the Coral in recent years. Aside from the release of their ‘lost’ album, ‘The Curse Of Love’, this is the first new utterance from the band since they went on hiatus almost six years ago.

‘Distance Inbetween’ – their eighth album – is the first to feature former Zutons guitarist Paul Molloy and his arrival coincides with the introduction of a darker side to the blend of psych-pop-rock that we’re used to.

Opening the record is Connector, a song that could easily be a metal standard in the hands of another band thanks to its downbeat vocals and repetitive, crunchy riff. The trademark vocal harmonies are back in force for the following White Bird, which owes much to the psych bands of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.

It’s a style that flows throughout the record as a whole, with many of the tunes taking their inspiration from the Doors, Cream and quite a sizeable chunk of Barrett-era Pink Floyd. The music your dad would have lapped up back in the day has been catapulted into 2016.

If you’re expecting to hear the next Dreaming Of You or In The Morning here, you’ll be sorely disappointed. ‘Distance Inbetween’ features one or two up-tempo numbers, notably Misfortune and one of the album’s highlights in Holy Revelation, but due to the majority of the album running along at a similar pace, it can get a little bogged down from time to time.

The more ethereal, slower songs won’t be to everyone’s taste and the omission of the title track, much inferior to She Runs The River, would have improved the overall set. But James Skelly’s vocals, knack for catchy songwriting and the harmonies throughout make this quite the unexpected, but welcome, comeback album. Familiar, yes, but still something new to get your teeth into.
