Dixie Chicks have changed their name. The country-pop giants will be known simply as ‘the Chicks’ from now on.
In a move that echoes Lady Antebellum’s recent shortening of their moniker to ‘Lady A’ following Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality and the killing of George Floyd, the trio have excised ‘Dixie’ from their name due to the word’s context as a historical catch-all for the southern United States, including those that formed the Confederacy. “We want to meet this moment,” reads a note beneath the group’s new name on their website.
“Dixie, for the record, is the epitome of white America, a celebration of a Southern tradition that is indivisible from Black slaves and those grand plantations where they were forced to toil for free,” Jeremy Helligar recently wrote in a Variety essay titled After Lady Antebellum, Is It Time for the Dixie Chicks to Rethink Their Name?.
In a statement released to Pitchfork, the Chicks said: “A sincere and heartfelt thank you goes out to “The Chicks” of NZ for their gracious gesture in allowing us to share their name. We are honored to co-exist together in the world with these exceptionally talented sisters. Chicks Rock!”
Head below to stream a track from the trio’s new LP ‘Gaslighter’, which is out on July 17. March March arrives accompanied by a video from director Seanne Farmer, which cuts together footage of protests both contemporary and historical. “If your voice held no power, they wouldn’t try to silence you,” runs its caption.
