Fingernail follows the Los Angeles alt-rockers' previously shared tracks Little Me, Pete's Dad and Agua, and arrives hot on the heels of the US band's Horns, Thorns en Halos Farewell Tour across North America, which wrapped in March.
Like the other songs, the climactic offering was penned in the '90s but not recorded at the time by the band, which comprises guitarist Peter DiStefano and bassist Martyn LeNoble alongside Jane's Addiction members singer Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins. Speaking of the track, Farrell said:
"The moment the melody touched the words I knew it would be a special song. But I was too immature to understand the essence fully. There is no pain in the cutting of our hair, eyelashes or a fingernail, because they are dead, although the world at every instant is renewed. The death invested within us is pushed out, and the soul is again restored."
Perkins added: "Fingernail is a true marriage of story meets storytelling in twisted harmony," with DiStefano explaining, "Fingernail to me is the art of patience while in recovery." LeNoble also commented:
"Decades of growing, happiness, heartbreak, tension, loss and joy… growing pains. In this case it took almost 30 years for this song to slowly grow into what it is now. And, the way the song ends… I love redemption songs. I’d say we ended it well Perry, Peter and Stephen."
Prior to the recent flurry of songs, Porno for Pyros hadn't released any new music in over 25 years. Having formed back in 1992, after the split of Jane's Addiction, they released their self-titled debut in 1993 and its follow-up, 'Good God's Urge' in 1996, following which they splintered into different bands.
