THE AGITATOR - 'Get Ready/Let's Start Marching' - Review

The Agitator is Derek Meins, one very angry guy with a lot to rant about and Robert Dylan Thomas on the drums, formally the drummer with The Maccabees. Get Ready/Let’s Start Marching is a 2 track release, due out on the 5th July.

It is a raw stripped back sound, used to put across protesting lyrics about the world we live in are quite punk in their ideals, but far from punk in sound. In sound it is almost Chico meets hip hop and that can never be good. Poppy and thought provoking the tracks may be but ultimately they are lacking in quality or depth. The music is poor with the simplest of hip hop beats, not heard since New Kids On The Block, even Robert’s pounding of his drum skins does nothing to lift the quality.

Get Ready is a terrible track. It basically comprises of a hip hop beat while Derek (The Agitator) agitates my ear drums with his constant chant of ‘get ready’ and lack of imagination as he chants the rest of his poor quality lyrics.

Let’s Start Marching is a little better, the military style drumming is pretty clever and the lyrics a little better, but again it is a protesting rant, chanted over a pretty poor quality backing track and very little else.

All in all this small compilation does little to impress. The idea is good, during this time of economic insecurity and political unrest, the country is in, why not grab hold of that and use it for inspiration when writing lyrics, it’s just a shame it has not been done with any quality here.
