‘Super Monster’ is the debut album from American bedroom-pop musician Claud, but its arrival isn’t as low-key as that description suggests. This is also the first LP to be released by Saddest Factory, a new label operated by indie-rock star Phoebe Bridgers. Fortunately, this is an often spectacular bow that outweighs any helping of hype.

Claud presides over a sound that sways between wholesome pop, cool indie and DIY ideals, and within this nebulous arena ‘Super Monster’ sparks so much joy. A chilled listen that will enchant those who already admire artists such as Beabadoobee and Cavetown, it’s notably soft, romantic and cosy while encompassing so many aspects of growing up.

It perfectly portrays each step and stumble we take in life, from teenager to twentysomething, and is brimming with empathetic moments. The singer-songwriter swoons over our crushes with us, helps to mend broken hearts, and laughs along to our clichéd moments.

A nostalgic, dizzy daydream, the concept of ‘Super Monster’ was dreamt up through childhood sketches and cherished memories, yet Claud stays hand in hand with us through all of life’s ups and downs. By recognising and addressing those times when we may have encountered wrongdoing, or pain, they are not only able to capture the ears of their fanbase, but their emotions also.

‘Super Monster’ shines as a delightful, defining moment in this young musician’s career. From the moody acoustic blues of Guard Down to the synth pops that soar on In or In-Between, the record is poignantly representative of change and growth. Claud has created a pinpoint reminder to shake off any preconceptions of yourself by embracing every aspect of who you are.
